Why We Add Bonus Tools In Our DIY Murphy Bed Hardware Kits
We could have followed in our competitions footsteps by simply providing the hardware and a lift mechanism, but we wanted to go the extra mile for builders who choose to trust us with their diy bed project.
What Tools Did We Include Beyond The Murphy Bed Hardware?
So what exactly did we include in our kits that goes beyond the custom heavy duty hardware, piston opening and closing mechanism? Three useful gadgets that will make it easy to build your own murphy bed and also be useful after you've completed the project.
An Edge Band Trimmer
The most economical & typical way to build a murphy bed cabinet is by using plywood. However, to ensure that the finish is high-quality we recommend using a veneered plywood edge banding to make the wood look like traditional lumber.
Edge banding is applied to the unfinished edges of the plywood or particle board using a hot iron that activates glue on the bottom side of the banding strips. After the strips are attached, the excess must be removed. This can be done with a razor blade, but it is made effortless with a tool known as an edge band trimmer. The trimmer is slid along the board to remove the excess material.
See step one in our instruction book or youtube video for more details.
A comparable one can be purchased on Amazon for $32, but we include one with your murphy bed kit for FREE!
A 15mm Forstner Drill Bit With a Hex Shank
When following our step-by-step instructions on building your deluxe wall bed frame and cabinet, you'll notice that there are several steps which require drilling only partially through the wood. This is because we need to drill deep enough to mount and install some hardware pieces WITHOUT breaking through the other side of the wood face.
The 15mm forstner bit is designed to be exactly the correct size to allow for the hardware plates to sit flush without any room to wiggle. This makes installation significantly easier and is just one of the many reasons this is the best DIY murphy bed kit on the market.
Again, if you buy a murphy bed hardware kit from someone else you can buy one of these on Amazon for $10 - Or you can get it for free with Hideaway Murphy Beds.
A 5 Piece Countersink Drill Bit Set
Is a countersink drill bit set 100% necessary for you to be able to build a DIY murphy bed cabinet? Well, no. But will it help you take your woodworking to the next level and be extremely satisfied with your murphy bed? Absolutely.
Countersink bits are used to predrill holes in wood prior to fastening a screw. They're effective in preventing wood splitting - especially when you need to drill holes near the edge of your boards. The bits also contain angled blades that leave a conical cutout that fits a screw head's angle. This allows the screw to fit perfectly just past the face of the wood. It makes the connection stronger, less prone to splitting, and can help conceal the head of the screw.
If you do choose to use the countersink bit (which we recommend), you'll only need to use one of the sizes - however, we included 5 because they're a valuable tool to have in your toolbox and we're just looking for ways to help provide you better value!
A 5pc countersink drill bit set can be found on Amazon for around $25 - but as you already guessed, its included at no extra cost with the deluxe murphy bed kit from Hideaway.
